Setting up a TrainingPeaks Account
To this end you will need to execute two steps:
- Set up a trainingpeaks.com athlete account if you don’t already have one.
- Do NOT upgrade to Premium because that is included as part of your fee for coaching with Uphill Athlete.
- Link your TrainingPeaks’ athlete account to our coaching account by clicking this link with you TrainingPeaks Account open in the same browser.
HR and GPS Training Watch for Tracking and Recording your Workouts.
You will need to have a watch that will track your heart rate with a chest strap and track your distance and pace data with a GPS. Most commonly this means using a Suunto, Polar, Garmin, or similar brand training watch with heart rate strap.
Note that we are adamant about the use of heart rate straps. The wrist-top heart rate recording technology is simply not accurate enough for training purposes.
Garmin Forerunner, Garmin Fenix-series, Suunto Ultra-series are the most common devices Uphill Athletes use.

If you’re (understandably) hesitant to buy a $500 watch, and want to use your smartphone, there are options for bluetooth-enabled heart rate straps that can work with a GPS enabled smartphone. Wahoo (and it’s app) is the most common brand we’ve encountered, and these devices cost around $50.
Before you buy something, it’s smart to make sure it works with TrainingPeaks. Here is a full list of devices TrainingPeaks is compatible with, it is extensive! But it does not cover common “fitness tracker” type devices, so make sure to consult the list.
Once you get your new watch, or if you already have one, you will need to register the watch and create an account. Suunto has Movescount. Garmin has Connect. Polar’s app is called Flow. Etc.
Finally, you have to give TrainingPeaks account permission to talk to your Movescount/Connect/Flow (etc) account. This is easy and really only requires being logged into both accounts and clicking a permission link. Here are instructions for:
When we are ready to start training you you set up your payment subscription (we can pause or cancel this anytime, so it makes it easy and it’s a one-time process for you). Here is the link to do that:
If you have not done so already, please set up a call with your coach as soon as you’re ready.
Your coach will put put up workouts as soon as you want to begin.
